To my total surprise, on Saturday, Eleanor Simmonds, achieved a new world record in the 400 m freestyle in the lane I served as time-keeper, it was lane 7 of the London Aquatics Centre.
That is what make being an official worthwhile, it is the knowledge that we can facilitate and assist greatness in the pool.
Obviously the shoulder injury will get better, one day, when that will be is uncertain and equally certain, as a determined young sports person one doesn’t want to drop out of the performance pathway.
Starting with the Performance Youth Squad this month with this injured shoulder. Not the best of starts, but nobody is perfect at all times.
Not certain whether people show more sympathy for cars breaking down rather than injured young athletes.
The Cambridge Grand Prix is not far away and it is cheering me up that it is in an iconic location. Who hasn’t heard of Cambridge, the world-famous university?
Will have to drop out of the 400 free. Cannot do long distance free style at the moment. Backstroke is easier. Must have injured some part of my shoulder muscle that is used by freestyle mainly.
Pleased to discover that Madison already has achieved 6 automatic qualifying times for next year’s County Championships.
Even though she does not participate in any national competition this year, the qualifying window for counties gets better each year, indicating an over-all improvement of performance. Meaning Madison qualifies for more difficult target times earlier than before.
In previous years Madison had to struggle to get the County qualifying times in time for registration but this year we are well ahead. The 2018 season has not yet finished and we already qualify for 2019.
There is now a lot of suspense in the air because Hackney Aquatics will shortly announce squad movements. It’s a very big deal for swimmers whether they get selected for the top Performance squad or the competition squad.
Makes a huge difference, some competitions can only be entered by performance squads. Madison has been in performance since several years now and doesn’t want anything else.
At the moment we are trying to get tougher. We are entering competitions mainly to increase stamina. Going to swim in
- Open Water
- Long distance swims
- Sponsored Swim the Thames 5km in total
Some events we do not enter to win but just to condition.
We know where Madison can get good results but there are those events where the chances are not so good and those are the ones we will enter as well, e.g. 400 free, 400 IM. Winning medals is not always possible but taking part is.
Overall the consistently best swimmers in the long run are always the ones who have the best variety of strokes and distances.
As a special treat for after the summer break. during which Madison will keep busy by attending
- The Melanie Marshall SwimInspiration summer camp
- climbing and canoeing workshops
- perhaps a Hackney Aquatics summer camp
then in September onto the level 2 Cambridge Grand Prix
and also Redbridge which is always a nice weekend to get some more County and Regional Times for next season.
Overall there is an excellent variety of competitions that Hackney Aquatics attends, which really enriches the life of any swimmer.
Madison did 4 races and won Gold twice, obtained 3 regional qualifying times and achieved some very good Personal Best Times.
- 400 freestyle – entry time 5:13:01 = result 5:05:97
- 200 backstroke – entry time 2:46:16 = result 2:36:88
- 50 backstroke – entry time 35:80 = result 32:55 Gold medal
- 100 backstroke – entry time 1:15:87 = result 1:12:64* Gold medal
This time we came fully prepared. We started preparations the day before with good nourishment routines and this time didn’t get lost on the way to the Basildon Sporting Village.
There is a very easy walking route from the Basildon train station and with a little research, this time we made it without problems. We arrived early, had an early lunch at the Basildon Sporting Village cafe and then the event started.
And at last but not least, Madison finally now achieved regional qualifying times. The hard work and excellent training at Hackney Aquatics paid off. Madison has 2 guaranteed and 1 consideration time. Wow and well done.
*There was one faster swimmer on a time-trial.
